Stellenbosch, South Africa, January 7-18 2019
Stellenbosch, South Africa, January 7-18 2019
Since 2002, machine learning has come a long way and is taking center stage in many areas of research. It is a field buzzing with excitement and progress is unprecedented. Although machine learning has, at many institutions, become part of mainstream curricula, MLSS still provides the opportunity to learn from the foremost experts in the field; experts known not only for the excellence of their research but also their enthusiasm to share their knowledge with others. MLSS 2019, as always, provides not only an introduction to the basic ideas behind machine learning, but researchers will also share the excitement of the current developments.
The main goal of the Machine Learning Summer Schools as stated on its website at http://mlss.cc/: The machine learning summer school series started in 2002 with the motivation to promulgate modern methods of statistical machine learning and inference. It was motivated by the observation that while many students are keen to learn about machine learning, and an increasing number of researchers want to apply machine learning methods to their research problems, only few machine learning courses are taught at universities. Machine learning summer schools present topics which are at the core of modern Machine Learning, from fundamentals to state-of-the-art practice. The speakers are leading experts in their field who talk with enthusiasm about their subjects.
For the first time since the start of the Machine Learning Summer Schools in 2002 (see http://mlss.cc/), it will be held in South Africa. Stellenbosch is situated in the wineland region of South Africa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellenbosch. It is a beautiful part of the world, surrounded by vineyards and mountainous nature reserves, it has much to offer for every individual.
The town’s oak-shaded streets offer a rich cultural history, cafes, boutiques and art galleries….. and of course you can taste some of the best wines produced in the magnificent vineyards and farms around Stellenbosch.
We are looking forward to welcoming you on the first day of the 2019 summer school on 7 January and hosting you until 18 January 2019.
We encourage students doing their Ph.D. in machine learning or people working in industry in related topics to apply.
The MLSS is a course offered to graduate students, researchers and professionals. The courses consists of lectures by respected researchers who come from the industry as well as from academia. The lectures will touch several fundamental as well as advanced concepts related to, but not limited to, machine learning, data analysis and inference.
